Why Minor as an Engineer?
Adding a minor in college is incredibly useful as it can complement your major and make you stand out from your other graduating peers. Additionally, they state that pursuing a minor allows you to explore your personal interests outside of your major. Finally, if you decide to pursue a minor and, in the process, find out that the minor is something you are passionate about, it is a possibility to change your minor to double major.
As an Engineer, minoring allows you to gain a specialization in a specific topic you are interested or something completely different from your major that piques your interest. Additionally, as engineering majors require very heavy and rigorous course loads, taking classes outside of engineering for a minor allows you to have a “break” from engineering courses.
Popular Engineering Minors
While adding 18 or more credits to an already heavy course load as an engineer might seems intimidating at first, there are plenty STEM and engineering-related minors that coincide with the classes already requires for engineering majors. Some minors will only require one to two extra classes to acquire!
A great resource to figure out what minors are easy to obtain for each engineering major can be found in the various College of Engineering Advising Handbooks. These handbooks can be found with a simple Google search as shown in the image below:
Below are the resources of recommended minors that are easy to obtain by major. There are over 200 minors offered at Penn State for you to choose from. The complete list of minors can be found on the Penn State Bulletin website. Pick a minor you think will benefit you in your career and/or pick something you are passionate about. College is about discovering what you love, and pursuing a minor is an excellent way to do that.
One quick reminder, while many of these minors are 18 or more credits, many of the classes required for each minor “double count” for some of the classes required by each major, making them much easier to obtain. Some minors correspond so well with the major classes that you might only have to take 1-3 extra classes to obtain the desired minor.
