The Arboretum: My Peaceful Place

Amidst the rigors of engineering academics, it is important to integrate some free time. During the fall, the background of our campus begins to change colors, and the air becomes a little cooler. A great way to relax and disconnect from the tension of campus is to take a walk up to the arboretum. The arboretum features the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens, which contains a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers. There are scattered benches to enjoy the gardens; one of the most popular spots is around the Fountain Garden, which is illuminated at night.

If you’re a child at heart or value innocence and wonder, a walk through Childhood’s Gate Garden may interest you. Inspired by a line from our alma mater, the Childhood’s Gate Garden was designed as a place to enjoy the outdoors, learn together, and discover the natural world. This garden is a “microcosm of our regional landscape,” featuring several native Pennsylvania species as well as a limestone cave.

For anyone that is looking for places to run (with a buddy), the arboretum links you to the Bellfonte Central Rail Trail. This trail is only 1.3 miles long, but continues the natural beauty of the arboretum and furthers its purpose to connect the community with nature. mage result for bellefonte central rail trail

The arboretum provides an escape for the students and faculty of Penn State. It is intended for us to use to refresh and renew, however, summer and fall are the best months to experience its flourishing gardens. In fact, the arboretum is a popular venue for weddings and events alike! The arboretum is located across from the Business Building.
