WHOOOHOOO! You’ve made it to Penn State! It’s such an exciting time getting to go to such an amazing school! It’s even more amazing that you have such an amazing program and support group for women engineers.
One thing I’ve learned over my first year is that engineering isn’t just about studying 24/7 to get good grades. It’s about having a strong work ethic, while getting involved in some of the amazing clus Penn State has to offer! And of course we’ve got some amazing engineering clubs that will broaden your horizons and provide you with an amazing network of classmates that can become your most valuable resources. So here’s your guide to all (most) Penn State engineering clubs!!
Of course being a part of WEPO may make you curious about other women in engineering clubs! As a woman engineer at Penn State you are already provided with all the great resources WEP has to offer. WEP is not a club however, it’s a resource and a program that is available to you. It’s meant to help strengthen your personal and professional skills! Outside of this amazing program; however, is the Society of Women Engineers, which is the club I am most involved with on campus. SWE offers so many different types of events that you can get involved in. It ranges from professional to social to outreach to service. Anything you could imagine you can do in SWE!
Not only are there clubs for just women engineers, there are also discipline based clubs: one for every major!!! If you are interested in Mechanical Engineering, the American Society for Mechanical Engineers is for you! Or if you want to be a Chemical Engineer, The American Institute of Chemical Engineers could be your cup of tea! No matter what type of engineering you choose, there’s a club out there for you that will expand your horizons on the different aspects of that major! (SUPER EXCITING!)
As a woman engineer we are a part of a minority. Well there’s not just clubs for us, there’s also clubs for others who are a minority in engineering!! Clubs such as the National Society of Black Engineers, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, and the Society of Hispanic Engineers are available to make any and every engineer feel at home in their four (or five) years at Penn State!
Not only do we have many clubs to make Penn State’s engineers feel at home and have a network of classmates to help them succeed, we also have many clubs that are service and outreach driven! Clubs such as Bridges to Prosperity and Engineers without Borders do a lot of planning and traveling to use their engineering skills to help the less fortunate in foreign countries! Bridges to prosperity travels to a certain country every year to build a bridge that a town may need to get through their daily lives. Then we also have Engineering Ambassadors that is more of an outreach organization in which students will go to middle and high schools to get students thinking about STEM. Engineering Ambassadors also give tours of the college of engineering to prospective students and their families!
Finally, if you are interested in Greek life, Phi Sigma Rho is the engineering sorority here at Penn State that requires all of its members to be in the college of engineering.
The most important thing to remember about Penn State Engineering is that it’s not all about your classes and your GPA, it’s about what you do along side of taking classes and who you are as a person that will advance you in your career world. I personally have benefitted greatly from being a member of the Society of Women Engineers and have made many new friends in the process! I have personally contributed my professional skills to SWE! I hope you take advantage of as many clubs as you can and become the best engineer you can be! Best of Luck! WE ARE!
