Penn State is an amazing university with endless opportunities both inside the classroom and outside! Besides clubs and other organizations to get involved in, there are plenty of amazing things to do each weekend at Penn State!
Right off the bat, Penn State looks to get its students involved in campus life. On September 8th, one of the first weekends on campus, all first-year students will have the opportunity to participate in the Fresh START Day of Service. Being Penn State’s largest day of service, new students will be introduced to their peers as well as have the ability to engage in service to the community of State College and Penn State. Checking in outside of the Hub, students are provided with lunch and participate in team building exercises before breaking-off to complete their volunteer activities.
Fresh START is not the only campus run service event that Penn State students may participate in. Do you have the sustainability bug? Well, I have the perfect pastime for your Friday nights! On each Friday throughout the school year, the Penn State Council of Sustainable Leaders manages student organizations that choose to participate in Friday Night Lights Out. This event involves members of each organization walking around campus, turning lights off in classrooms that would otherwise be on the entire weekend. Not only does this event help save energy, but it is also a great way to meet new people!
Each weekend (and one of my personal favorites), the Student Programming Association hosts LateNight in the Hub. Whether you’re interested in seeing the latest movie (personal favorites include Moana, La La Land, A Star is Born, and It amongst others), painting a canvas, creating a plush pillow, eating Sbarro pizza or watching groups of students play D&D, there is something for everyone at Hub LateNight! While the movie showings begin Thursday night and continue into Saturday, you can join other fledgling artists on Friday and Saturday nights to create one-of-a-kind plush pillow masterpieces.
There are many great ways to spend your weekends at Penn State! Whether it be volunteering, wandering around the Hub or making friends as you walk through campus, you will never be bored. Now, as you daydream about all the memories you’ll make during your weekends at Penn State, please enjoy this precious gem of fellow Team B Mentor, Amanda Hildenbrand, and I during our first Hub LateNight all the way back in 2016!
