Making the most of all types of weather

One of the most beautiful things about State college is that it receives every season. Some may see this as a downfall to our great school, but I see it as a way to enjoy every aspect Penn State has to offer, in every type of weather.

When arriving at school in August, you’ll usually be graced with the sunny and hot weather you would only expect to see at the beach. But no, State College has that too. Although it makes moving into your (un-airconditioned) room a bit of an inconvenience, our school has so many opportunities to enjoy this weather. Some things that I enjoyed were hiking Mount Nittany, playing sports on Old Main or HUB lawn, or taking a run to the Arboretum. The Arboretum is another great place to explore, or have a picnic with friends. On warmer days in the fall and spring, I would also find myself studying outside my dorm on a blanket. I suggest bringing some type of lawn or beach blanket to use on days like that.

Then around November, the weather starts to get a little cooler. Not cold enough that you’ll need a full winter coat, but definitely a sweatshirt or light jacket. During this time, a fun thing to do is explore stores and activities in downtown State College. There are tons of fun things that are offered just a block from campus that can help you get a break from studying. State College actually has an escape room, which is a fun way to spend time with friends without having to go out into the cold. Another cool, or should I say “hot” spot downtown is 2000 degrees. Here, you can decorate and fire your own pottery to take home with you. And it’s right next to Dunkin Donuts so on your way back to your dorm you can stop for some hot chocolate!

Then, just before you leave for winter break up until March, it’s pretty cold. Here and there you’ll get that random day that’s in the high 60’s but mostly there is snow on the ground. A really awesome place to go during this time is Tussey Mountain. Only a few minutes off campus, Tussey Mountain has awesome skiing and snowboarding trails and its super easy to get to by bus. Another fun thing to do in the snow is go sledding down the HUB lawn. Take a break from studying and enjoy the crisp air building a snowman with some friends!

Especially during exam seasons, it’s important to take a break and enjoy the world outside. Nature is one of the best ways to destress, so take advantage of all that Penn State has to offer!!
